Dyfi Osprey Project
At the end of December, the wonderful Frederic went on an extensive search of the area where Leri was last recorded. Having recently recovered the tracking device and remains of another young Osprey for Roy Dennis, Frederic was determined to find something. Sadly his efforts did not uncover any new evidence. We still check the tracking data records everyday but nothing new has been received for over two months. Heartfelt thanks, once again, to Frederic. The mystery continues....

The camera is posting an oddly colored picture for me. It's hard to see mama osprey.

I spent a lovely vacation on Santibel Island several years ago. One of my favorite memories is walking on the beach at sunset with a thunderstorm in the far distance and a large white heron wading in the water outlined against the sky. It was magic. I didn't know about ospreys then. Maybe I saw some and didn't know it.

What terrific news on Dulas, i'm so happy to know he is doing well, we can only hope Leri is enjoying her stay
Martha, the cam seems a bit fuzzy for me and maybe a little pale but then it will be afternoon and maybe the sun shining close to cam, but it's good to be able to watch

Jukka from Finland is still on the river Benoue which runs into the southeast of the Lagdo reservoir in Cameroon. This is where he spent the past two winters, staying in a very limited area. Latest fix is at 12:00 on 6th January.

Cannot wait to watch Finnish cams as the scenery as backdrop is breathtaking , hoping the Ospreys make it home safe as they seem to have the longest migration compared to the Uk, not sure about the USA Ospreys though

Now that was a great bit of footage. Interesting how the nesting platforms are only around 14ft high, and so obvious in the landscape, ie not hidden in the trees. Are egg thieves confined to the UK?

"100 kms flight north and back

At 1pm on 7th January he was flying north over the sea and headed 100 kms over the bay to two islands in an inlet on north side of Banc d'Arguin, where it stayed two before before at 1pm on 9th flew NW to the coast north of Cap Ste Anne. At 4pm was heading back south to roost that night on the coast near Cap Arzaze. Next day crossed the bay to the coast south of Arkeiss (Bedouin settlement) and at 10am was perched near Iwik, the HQ of the National Park. At 3pm he was back in his original location and roosted that night back in familiar haunts. Interesting exploratory flight by young ospery wintering in Africa for first time."

Janine texted Dyfi earlier - she's with the Rutland guys in Gambia. Earlier they were, parked up on the side on the road, looking south. towards where Dulas was two days ago, he seems to spend the afternoons mostly in this area. Fingers crossed she sees him.

I am a little bit dubious about the Dutch one without a picture but the Vendee one was a certainty as they had a picture on the website.

They do seem to report ospreys left, right and centre in Holland.

EJandODIN thanks for posting. It makes great reading and to have seen so many osprey, although not Dulas, must be so exciting. The numbers and variety of birds they are seeing is an indication of what a good area this is for all of the birds.

What a wonderful experience for Janine, and of course, the others. A shame there wasn't a sighting of Dulas but so many other interesting birds. Look forward to the next instalment.

It looks like Dulas moved 100 miles south into Guinea Bisseau just before Janine got there:
"New developments today. Dulas has moved south - he was 100 miles away form his usual location last night in Guinea Bissau!. He seems to have left just a few hours before Janine and the Rutland guys got there on Monday. Gutted! Data points still coming in.

Great development with Einion too. He's fine and in the same place but we may have a photo of him - more later as I get it.. Ems"

Poor Janine, just missed him. Exciting if they have got a photo.

I have been in touch with Dr Roine Strandberg at the Lund University in Sweden regarding the 2 tagged Swedish ospreys and he is going to send me the complete file of the two young, and also data concerning a third more interesting one.

EJandODIN, this sounds very interesting.

Google Earth has been updated for Dulas. He must have flown very close to Tore on 15th jan. He is right down in Guinea bisseau now. Interesting to see what he does next. This is fascinating.

Isn't it interesting to watch them setting out to see if there are more interesting locations to fish. I tended to think they would just stay where they landed providing there was enough fish. But they do seem to enjoy the odd excursion. I wonder if they are feeling their way into the more established osprey sites.

All is well with Swedish ospreys 19153 and 49460. I have data up to 14.01.2012 and they are still at Sine Saloum in Senegal and Lac de Buyo in Ivory Coast.
I also have some info on another Swedish osprey 57375 which was tagged in 2009 and winters on the Western Sahara coast not far from the Canary Islands.

Thanks for the links. Wonder if No 12 will come back this year? Will be interesting to see what happens in the next 2 or 3 months. He obviously found a great place straight away and has been so settled there.

I have been analysing the data I received about osprey 57375 from Sweden. This osprey is same age as Rothes and made its first return in 2011. Here is a summary:
Swedish osprey 57375 left its wintering quarters near Cape Bojador in Western Sahara on 10th May 2011, crossed into Spain near Gibraltar on 15th May, then crossed Western Pyrenees into France on 18th May. Arrived north of Koblenz in Germany on 21st May for a stopover on the Rhine until 28th May. Crossed over Copenhagen in Denmark and on into Sweden on 29th May. Only remained in Sweden until 5th June then returned to Germany. Went on an extensive tour of Germany and also one trip to Poland. Remained in Germany until 23rd August then crossed over Switzerland and back into France on 24th August. Crossed Western Pyrenees into Spain on 27th August and then back to Africa via Gibraltar on 30th August. Arrived back at wintering place on 3rd Sept.

Thanks for the analysis. Makes very interesting reading. When returning to Europe didn't waste any time until the stopover in Germany. Migration flight was also quick and direct. Interesting that it traveled around Germany and explored there. I wonder if there were too many birds and nests in Sweden for it to be able to settle or explore there. Maybe it has a German born parent, fascinating.

I just have observed what I think are three eggs in the nest at Sanibel Island/Ocean Beach. I don't see anyone else noting this so maybe I am just seeing things. There was no adult on the next when I opened the link and one arrived withint 1 minute so they were uncovered.

Great to hear Ospreys on the whole are doing just great, I wonder if the youngsters will take over the fishing spots vacated from the older ones migrating back to the UKand further afield, or will they remain in the same roosting spots as at present

What an interesting set of circumstances with the photos of Dulas and Einion.

Have just been reading nesting notes 2011/2012 from Dunedin. Saw the post from one Brian of RSPB Gabfest (???) with naming info. Apology for giggling a bit: think he saw "Dunedin Stirling Links" on the signpost and thought it was a twinning exercise (hence the name Wallace) Tis a links golf course! Please correct me if I am wrong: there may well be a twinning between Dunedin, Florida and Stirling, Scotland

After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that Bynacks lack of significant movements from 19th to 21st january was due to weather conditions. Here is the forecast for those days:

Really interesting to read the updates on Einion and Dulus. I knew the folk down there were gutted that no sign of Dulus but apparently the day before he decided
to move on, and flew south to Guinea-Bissau, over 100 miles away. Dulas had stayed around Panchang for three and a half months only to up-sticks just hours before Janine got there.
As I write the next batch of data is coming in for Dulas - It looks like he's ventured even further south into Guinea, around 200 miles south of Panchang and the Gambia River. Google Earth will be updated as soon as all the data points are in. I hope this week turns out to be a little bit calmer!

Photos taken of Einion on the Somone Reserve, Senegal where he now resides - he is looking very well.

Thinking of Rothiemurchus and he touring around Scotland last summer, Dulus is perhaps showing us that their gap years in Africa are probably the same - trying to find the best overwintering places.

I was so chuffed to read that the boys are doing so well.

Anne: Diaccia Botrona is a wetland just along the coast from Maremma Regional Park, which is the release site for the Corsica-Tuscany translocation project. Mediterranean ospreys don't migrate to Africa, so this is probably a bird from the project.

I didn't know about this project either so will also investigate.

0.00 The Maremma Regional Park is a few miles south of Grosseto in Tuscany. Typical landscapes – wooded hills crowned with ruined watchtowers, coastal pine forest and marshes. The pastures are grazed by the traditional cattle and horses which live semi-wild, tended by the butteri, or Maremma cowboys. By the Ombrone river, the park authorities have put up artificial nests and osprey dummies (not very convincing!).

2.06 (Corsica) Introduction to the osprey. The Italian name is “falco pescatore” or fishing falcon.

3.04 Project leader Andrea Sforzi explains why ospreys had stopped breeding in Italy by the 1960’s – hunting, coastal development, DDT and egg collectors.

3.50 Giampiero Sammuri, President of the Maremma Park. The translocation project was conceived in order to create a larger osprey “territory” stretching from Corsica across the Tuscan Archipelago, of which Elba is the largest island, to the Italian mainland.

4.50 Landscapes and fauna of Corsica. The Scandola Reserve, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, makes an ideal habitat for ospreys. Jean-Marie, who is responsible for looking after the osprey population, takes us on a boat trip to the reserve and shows off his freeclimbing skills to inspect a nest.

8.15 Back in the Maremma, the mouth of the Ombrone river has been chosen as the reintroduction site. Here the cages have been built to hold the young ospreys brought from Corsica until they fledge. Two park guards explain that the artificial nests, which they built 2 years before, weren’t enough to persuade migrating ospreys to nest.
