Cas has received the following email from Dunedin......

Dear DunedinOspreyCam Viewers,

The new camera is up and running at

thanks to the efforts of the Dunedin Parks and Recreation Department, IT, Facilities and Zucker and Zucker Marketing.

We have the new camera, thanks to Major Sponsors: Clearwater Audubon Society and Progress Energy, and to a Conglomerate of Sponsorships including the residents of Mediterranean Manor, CSX, St. Petersburg Audubon Society. All of these contributions were coordinated by Barbara Walker. Please see the Sponsors Page.

The new camera has the capability to pan, tilt, and zoom in and out. That will certainly add a lot of interest to the site. The web page has a Tour Dunedin FL link which will give you information about the community where the nest/platform is located. Last year we had almost two million hits from people in twenty different countries visiting

During the last week a pair of ospreys has been seen on and around the nest frequently. We should be expecting to see egg laying, hatching, feeding and fledging in the future. We want to document these events as they occur. If any of you snap a picture of a significant event such as mating or egg laying, please forward it, so we can include in the Nesting Notes.

It looks like we are off to an exciting 2012 Osprey nesting season.

Something has happened to Bynack or his transmitter. We await further news from Loch Garten. Last GPS signals were on 21st Jan.

Thanks Alan - though gutted about this. Seems that, with Leri, Joe and now Bynack, the perils of survival are not the migration itself but the threats in parts of Africa. We'll all hoe that - for Leri and Bynack - a transmitter is the problem but probably know that they've gone. We can look back to their growing up and fledging and enjoy again the life of a young osprey

EJandODIN has Bynack been close to where No 11 was? I see route No2 and remember that from No11 but think Bynack was further South. Wondered if you had both maps to hand to compare as it will probably take me all day to find. Laughing

Was catching up with the Osprey news and reading about the great time the Rutland group were having, and then came down with a bump to read about poor Bynack Sad I hope that it is a transmitter problem Fingers Crossed but probably unlikely.

Nan : 11 from the Lake District was on the same stretch of coast but further north. Conditions have not been good around the area where Bynack was living with a storm at sea on 19th to 21st and sandstorms inland. Also I was reading on Frederic Baceuz blog that there were very low temperatures and lots of hirundines were found dead with the cold.

Thanks Alan, I thought Bynack was further South. This would be the same storms that prevented some of the outings the Rutland Team had planned.

Nice Tricia - but 4.35 one not working. 4.36 one is fine. Is Debut a new video capture program for PC??

Edit - Tricia, must have been a doubler. Only 1 video now and working perfectly, thanks

I think announcements such as this which are 'time critical' might be better in the Daily Chat forum which is monitored more closely by most members, other than that I think this separate forum for Ospreys has generally been better through January and will probably prove beneficial once we get into the season proper. Any comments to the chat forum, please.

First osprey of the year , Very Happy I wonder if this is a well established pair. Dunedin are way behind, and yet the nest areas are fairly close.

Shocked to hear about Bynack - I'm of the school unless the dead body is dangled under my nose I will wait until 2013 to see if there is any sign of him.
As Anne says - it is an indication as to how hard migration and survival is for them.

Sad news about Bynack, but perhaps not completely final. Anything technical can malfunction, and often does, especially with the solar storms we've had lately. We may be gifted with an unexpected return next year.

Saddened to hear about Bynack but I shall remain hopeful that it is a transmitter fault. Who knows? These birds tend to surprise us. Maybe next year...?

Updates for both Einion and Dulas. Einion is still at the Somone Lagoon and Dulas is near Quebo in Guinea Bissau. This is where Spey was last year before he disappeared off the radar.

Peter - am sorry: still utterly confused. You advised that all posts to do with ospreys would be deleted from Daily Chat or moved here.

For me, no problem: won't report any more inconsequentials. Think others may still wonder where to post

Anne not too sure if this helps, but think when it comes to maybe watching a cam more folks will read it on main Forum , think this section is for maybe for catching up on news relating to Ospreys and nests, if i've got it wrong think Pete will let us know.
Query about posts on main Forum aren't easy to find so think Pete is asking us to save here any relevant news as all Osprey info is kept together but on main page if something is posted then it could take days to find something we were looking for.
Personally I think this will be much better once the season is up and running as we can maybe look back to a certain month and read back
I know this isn't the correct place to post this but Pete, hope it's ok to reply here just this once
Anne hope this has helped

Cas I think this is exactly what Pete is hoping for this section. It will be easier to find a post when looking for something after the fact. I keep forgetting it is here too Anne but I thinks it's just a matter of getting into the habit of checking daily for us. And that will come as second nature once the info really starts pouring in for this upcoming season again. As the saying goes, "Sometimes it's hard to teach an old dog new trick." Very Happy

Rio Cacheu is a National park. Hope she finds good fishing there.
Thanks for all the updates. Will not be long until we start to see some of the birds starting to move North.

Good to see the team on the island. Tim makes it all so interesting.
Swedish ospreys seem to find their spot and stay there.

Update from Rob Bierregaard on the US tagged ospreys:
"I'm happy to report pretty much that I have nothing to report! All five of our transmittered birds are settled in. North Fork Bob and Sr. Bones are right back where they spent last winter. NFB's arrival was a bit weird, but he finally got there and stayed put. Last year they both started migrating north late in March (20th for NFB and 25th for Bones), so they've probably got about 6 weeks on easy street down there before they have to make the big move north.
Snowy, our 2011 juvenile, seems to have settled down in the Venezuelan llanos. He's got another 14 months to go, so I suspect we'll see him move around a bit.
Belle (2010 juvenile from Martha's Vineyard) is still down on the Rio Madeira in southern Amazonian Brazil, while Thatch (2011 juv from Cape Henlopen, DE) is on the Amazon proper deep in Brazil. Both these birds will be coming north sometime this spring."

It seems one chick at Sanibel has been lost. Thought there was only one when she was feeding them but did see the second one.
Mum's shading them from the sun.

Nan : I was awaiting confirmation of this. I knew that one of the chicks was not fed yesterday and left at the side of the nest.

Alan apparently they had contacted someone from the Audubon society as one chick was at the side of the nest and people were calling. They said that sometimes parents would ignore a chick they percieved to be ill or weak to concentrate on stronger chicks so no intervention. Apparently this nest usually has 3 or 4 eggs but has only ever raised 2 chicks.

Again Alan thanks for the news on Rothiemurchus - though getting chased by a big bruiser is a bit of a come down. So hope he makes it back this year.

Thanks so much for the report on Rothiemurchus! I became quite fond of him last year when he was traveling around like a happy teenager with his first car. I'm sorry he's having to deal with territory fights with other ospreys, but I guess in reality it's good training for survival.

"Dulas and Einion. Latest data has just come in, Dulas still in the same area in Guinea-Bissau, however Einion has moved!.

By last night he had travelled over 100 miles north up the Senegal coast very near to where one of the Rutland birds winters, Orange 09 (1998). I hope he's not coming home, he's a year too early - maybe he's gone to look for Leri!. Google Earth will be updated shortly. Ems"

There is a new blog at Loch Garten:
"Tore and Rothes as before. No new data from Bynack / his tag, the battery looking like it might have given out, possibly buried by spindrift sand on that beach area in Mauritania, now unreached by the charging rays of the sun."

Jukka latest : No change. Still on the river Benoue in Cameroon. In 2010 Jukka left on migration on 23:03 and in 2011 on 26:03 so still 4 weeks or so to go before he returns to Finland. Latest fix 27.02.2012 @ 09:00.

Hi Folks - can anyone tell me if Loch Oich has a local osprey. I am up there for a couple of days early May so would love to see a local bird.

Alan, that new site is good. Notice there is a report of ospreys working on their nest already in Indiana. Concentration of nests in Virginia as well as Florida. Quite a few on platforms.
Maybe something we here in UK should be trying to get companies interested in doing. In USA birds seem to accept them and quickly claim them.

Extract from todays Loch Garten blog:
"And to our ospreys: still Rothes languishes on the Ilha de Unhocomozinho, I can't wait to report that she is on the move, maybe next week........... and Tore is meandering around her inlet of the Cacheu River west of Quedanga in Guinea Bissau, she's not travelling far so it must be good fishing grounds for her."

Last blog entry on 23rd says the other osprey pair are still around so this maybe explains why the nest is rarely left with no occupant. Have posted a photo showing the perch. One of the birds came in to land just as I clicked. The area is very wooded and the other view showed how high the nest is.
